The
Vortex 4 + is a craft designed for serious use, it is designed to carry 5 adults
but on a rescue mission in France it happily coped with 8 adults, a little
cramped for seating room...... but the craft performed well and carried the rescued
people to safety. The
additional 0.85m length over the Vortex 2+ does give it increased stability in
very rough conditions as well as increasing the payload capabilities. The
designer has walked all round this craft, whilst floating in the middle of the
Solent; buoyancy capability is excellent. On two occasions this craft has
carried 'dead' hovercraft across its deck as well as having 3 people on
board. The
seating arrangement is very flexible, whilst the pilot sits in the centre, up
quite high with excellent visibility, the passengers can sit in one of the two
rows of moulded side by side seats or if the front row is removed, the centre
tunnel can be used to sit one behind the other. The advantage of this
arrangement is the increased baggage area. Control is provided by two rudders to control direction and a
series of ailerons to control the trim of the craft depending on the load /
passengers being carried. With a simple throttle lever to control the engine
speed, the controls could not be easier. The
use of the 2 cylinder BMW engine provides a power plant with an excellent power
to weight ratio and being a BMW it has a very good reputation for reliability.
The use of a fuel injected engine means it is fuel efficient with a very low
level of maintenance. Cruising at 60kmh with 4 adults on board is achieved with
the engine working at under 5000rpm, ticking over when compared to the engines
maximum speed of 7500rpm. The extra power that is available helps the pilot cope
easily with unexpected navigational problems. Owing
to its length, a twin axle trailer with brakes is recommended, 1000kg suspension
units are more than adequate, the additional load bearing capabilities of this
trailer as compared with the Vortex 2+ trailer, is accounted for by the
increased weight of the suspension units and longer trailer.
